Born in East Bergholt, Suffolk, Alan started his farming career at Chadacre Agricultural Institute near Bury St Edmunds.  From there he went on to a large farm near Stowmarket and subsequently grew all sorts of crops for Birds Eye.  Alan was the farm manager on a private estate in Ongar, Essex, before starting his own business from 1987, "Garden, Forestry & Agricultural Contracts".
