Goat husbandry

This one-day course will help you to find out whether you want to keep goats or, if you already have them, how to look after them properly.

Course Content

This course is aimed at the complete beginner and will cover all aspects of goat keeping and their care.  The leader is Beverley Whelan.  Click on her name above to see more about her.

You will learn about the different goat breeds and their suitability for your purpose.  The course will cover housing requirements, feeding of adult and kid goats, health and hygiene (including worming, hoof trimming and vaccinations), common diseases, how to identify and treat them and also DEFRA and Animal Trading Standards requirements.  There will be the opportunity to have a go at hoof-trimming during the day as Beverley will bring some of her goats.

At the end of the day you will have the knowledge you need to decide if goat keeping is for you and what to look for when choosing your goat.

Beverley's knowledge of the subject was very comprehensive.  I thought the hands-on toe-clipping time spent with the resident Saanen goats was really useful and instructive.

I really enjoyed the course.  Because I want goats to be a commercial proposition, or at least not a loss, I would have liked to know more about numbers:  costs, land needed, feed amounts.  But otherwise great – friendly, honest, informative.

I would love to learn a little more about keeping goats on a commercial basis, although think most people were here because they would like their own smallholding, so that’s fine.  I also really enjoyed meeting the other people on the course – the informal nature and the lunch setting was great as it meant we could all get to know each other.  Bev was great at answering questions and leeting us pick her brains about everything.

I would have liked a bit more interactive style of learning – sitting and listening fine, relaxed and informal – but it was good to go out to the goats and to be hands on as much as possible.  But overall – excellent!  Just an idea – photos of Beverley’s set up on her smallholding would help support her descriptions and information being given.

Beverley was delightful, lovely to meet someone who is passionate about her subject.  Goats are wilful creatures.  The course covered everything we needed to know on how to handle, prepare and love our new venture.

The catering was great but would have liked to have more hands on activities and taken a shorter amount of time. 

Wonderful (place, people, food) day thank you all.  I would stay if I could.
